Zombies have been here since the earliest times.
My research into Mayan culture and mythology shows that their underworld was inhabited not by demons and fire (as in the Christian mythos) but by lords of Xibalba, the "Black Hole", who were putrid, ugly, falling apart. They had names like 'Pus Face' and 'Bloody Teeth' and frequently took your head.
The Mayan kings and nobles wore masks that swallowed the tops of their heads, skulls that 'ate their brains' and gave them supernatural powers, but sometimes killed them. Kings were shown, in carvings, about to ascend to the throne, and completely terrified. It is not uncommon for your ancestors to follow you around, waiting for you to make a mistake - they would accept sacrifices of blood (which kept the gods alive of hearts and innards and brains. The Mayans had altars set up all around to keep bloody hearts available for the gods consumption.
The Mayan calendar was so advanced it still accurately predicts the rise and set of Venus each night, and tells that the world will change on Dec 23, 2012. At that point planetary alignment and the spin of the Milky Way brings up back to the same spot we were in 2500 years ago, when the Mayans believed that rotting gods first chased them through the night ...
